In respects to SEO, social media provides an avenue for delivering critical social signals to Google, which the search giant then uses as part of its overall relevancy algorithm. Your job is to ensure that the right amount and quality of social signals are being generated to your content.

There are a number of different social signals that Google derives from your social media activity. Now, for the most part, especially if you're a newcomer to the web, it's likely that your social signals will be lacking. However, understanding what signals Google looks to is an important part in your SEO education.

Once you've understood how Google views your social signals, you can work to improve your site's overall presence on social media. Still, you shouldn't obsess over it. There's only so much that you can do without trying to bend or break the rules.

Again, what this will come down to is value. If what vou're putting out into the world delivers real value, social signals will accumulate on their own. If, what you're trying to do is game the system, then you'll have a hard time replicating the organic social signals that Google is after.

Don't waste your time trying to come up with sneaky ways to boost followers, fans, likes or shares. It won't work. In fact, that will backfire. Spend your time developing high-quality content that delivers enormous value. Take the time to research and put together useful content that you know your readers Will love.

It takes time to do this. If I haven't hammered that point home by now, then clearly something has been amiss. But there's a reason why I keep driving home the point of delivering value. Truly, it's through value that trust is garnered and relevancy is developed.

Yes, you need age and you need authority and you need other things. But it all starts with value. Value prefaces everything else that you do on the web. Focus on developing considerable value through your content, and over time, your SEO will skyrocket.

Keep in mind that while search engines like Google do consider these social signals, they aren't heavily influencing the algorithms. However, for social media profiles with millions of authentic fans and followers that directly visit content posted through the profile, Google does consider this as a strong signal.

Direct website traffic is an important signal to Google. It knows that if authentic traffic to your site isn't coming from its SERPs, and it's arriving through social media posts through a large fan-base, then your authority will likely
increase.

If you do have millions of fans or followers on a platform like Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter or Facebook, then congratulations. But it also didn't happen overnight. If you've taken the time to link to existing content on your website through your social media profile, then Google is very familiar with you. With all that being said, let's briefly review some of the social signals that are of importance to Google today:

  1. Total number of authentic fans or followers How many authentic followers does your page or profile have?
    How quickly did those followers grow?

  2. Age and authority of social media profile :
    What's the age of the social media profile? How long ago was it established? And how much link authority does it actually have?

  3. Authority and engagement of social media fans or followers :
    How engaged are the fans or followers that you have on your social media profile? Are they fans with high authority, meaning a high number of engaged and authentic followers themselves?

  4. Number of average shares and comments on social media posts:
    How often are your posts getting shared and commented on?

  5. Frequency and velocity of shared content from website :
    When you share links from your website, how much engagement do you get on your social media profiles? What's the velocity of the links being created? Are they increasing or decreasing in velocity?
